Fifth Grade

We are coming upon the home stretch and we are making sure we cherish every moment of our last two months as fifth graders at GFS!  I can’t believe its May already…where has the time gone?!  This month is a very busy month for 5th graders – we have lots planned:

  • On May 3rd - 7th, we will be celebrating and learning about South Africa during International week.
  • May 14th we are travelling with 4th grade and Tr. Tom to Gettysburg to see the battlefields.
  • On May 25th, 5th graders will be hosting the 3rd & 4th graders and faculty members at the Restaurante de Espanol with Maestra Rosana.

In math we are continuing to learn about fractions, mixed numbers and percents.  In language arts we will start reading A View from Saturday, the interesting story of an unlikely group of 6th graders who share their lives as they compete together in an academic bowl competition.  In writing we are continuing our Graduation Speeches! Each student is working very hard to generate a speech that is heart-felt and speaks to who they are as an individual.  In social studies students are researching a specific topic on South Africa to report to the class during International Week.  We will also be studying the Civil War in preparation for our Gettysburg field trip.  Tr. Tom will even come in to our classroom to teach a few lessons!  In science we are continuing our Life Science unit.  We will take a look at comparing living things; how organisms reproduce, change and adapt; and what makes up an ecosystem.
