After a blizzard ruined our initial plan, First through Fifth Grades finally visited the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown in March. Aside from being the premier home of the New Hope Impressionist paintings, the museum also offered the children other exhibits they found interesting. A favorite was the Nakashima Reading Room - which rendered them strangely quiet (unfortunately, we could not take this room with us!). A good time was had by all.
At the end of April, we welcomed a visiting artist, Chris Chadwick, for two consecutive Fridays. Chris has been a popular instructor at the Chester County Art Association and is primarily known for his watercolor paintings of Chester County. At Goshen, he chose to have the students each create a large wax resist painting based on some tree of life paintings by the famous Austrian artist Gustav Klimt.
Fifth Grade, meanwhile, have begun creating their self portraits, which will figure prominently in the Arts Festival. They also finished some impressive cut paper creations based on a work by Henri Matisse.
In addition to the aforementioned Matisse project, Fourth Grade have completed studies in both radial design and one-point perspective.
The Third Graders did a Matisse project as well, this one based on his painting “Red Fish”. The results are magnificent! A fun project that taught distortion and foreshortening preceded that. Currently they are finishing a mixed media project involving reptiles (not real ones).
Second Grade continues to experiment with line, wax resist, overlapping, basic color theory and monochromic painting.
First Grade created their own pinch and coil pots out of clay and then painted them. They also completed pictures involving silhouettes, repetitive shapes and wet into wet watercolor.
